-
The Hamburg International Maritime Exhibition is sponsored by the Hamburg Exhibition Company of Germany, which began in 1963. It is the largest and most influential professional exhibition and fair in the maritime industry in the world, gathering all well-known enterprises in the international industry. The SMM is a large-scale international maritime exhibition event integrating shipbuilding, machinery and marine technology. It brings together the world's top shipyards, key participants in the value chain, operators and service providers; at the same time, it gathers representatives of the industry, government, navy and scientific circles.
During September 3th to 6th, 2024, this SMM International Maritime Exhibition will be an exhibition and lecture on innovation and concept. It will attract more than 2,000 exhibitors from nearly 70 countries, and will also open four theme stages for free for the first time; all conference audiences can participate freely. The themes of this exhibition include Decarbonization, Digitalization, Talent Recruitment and Maritime Security and National Defense. About 2,000 exhibitors will provide the latest developments in various fields of shipping (from shipbuilding to interior decoration).
Claus Ulrich Selbach, head of the Maritime and Technical Exhibition Department of the Hamburg Exhibition and Convention Centre, explained: "The Hamburg International Maritime and Technology Expo provides a stage for the most important topics in the maritime industry, so it plays a key role in the road to a sustainable and digital future in the maritime industry. The Global Maritime Environmental Conference (GMEC) and the Offshore Dialogue will focus on the decarbonization of the marine industry. Sören Ehlers, director of the Institute of Marine Energy Systems of the German Aerospace Centre, further said: "The marine industry urgently needs alternative fuels in the process of moving towards climate neutrality. Whether it is methanol or ammonia, its base is hydrogen.” Nicola Good, an expert from Lloyd's Register, will also discuss issues related to energy transformation.
Another focus is digitalization. The Maritime Future Summit will explore the role of artificial intelligence in it. The Artificial Intelligence Centre will also award the "AI for the Oceans Award". Practical applications such as the hull cleaning robot Hull Skater will be demonstrated. SMM provides a variety of display platforms for young and innovative companies, such as Startup Route, the Maritime Innovation Challenge of the International Conference on Maritime Safety and Defense (MS&D), and the startup project competition organized by German maritime startups.
The shortage of skilled workers is also a core topic of this maritime exhibition. In the maritime career market, career forums and special student programs, young people can connect with potential employers to learn about career paths and job opportunities in the shipping industry. In addition to the latest trends in naval shipbuilding, the MS&D conference also discussed security policy challenges and the protection and defense of maritime infrastructure. Moritz Brake, a corporate consultant and captain of a reserve frigate, emphasized: "Without proper safety concepts and flexibility, any business model in the maritime field cannot remain competitive." On the safety and defense route, there will also be exhibitors, shipyards and suppliers, focusing on shipbuilding and equipment for the Navy and Coast Guard. Other thematic areas of SMM also include ship financing, cruises and ferries, and the internal accessories of passenger ships, will finally be revealed on the exhibition!
